Humantay: Quick Tour Guide

Humantay Lagoon is a glacial lake located in the Cusco region, at over 4,200 meters above sea level. Famous for its intense turquoise color and its spectacular location at the foot of Mount Humantay, it is one of the most visited destinations for trekking and nature lovers.

What is the trek to Humantay Lagoon like?

The hike to Humantay Lagoon is approximately 3 km (one way), with a continuous ascent that can take between 1.5 and 2 hours. While it is not a long route, the altitude makes it demanding, so acclimatization is recommended. The hike starts from Soraypampa, and the path is of moderate difficulty.

Important Tour Tips

Acclimatization: It is essential to spend at least one or two days in Cusco before the tour to avoid altitude sickness.

Appropriate Clothing: Bring thermal clothing, a waterproof jacket, a hat, gloves, and sunglasses.

Comfortable Footwear: Wear trekking shoes with good grip to avoid slipping.

Sun Protection: At high altitudes, the sun is more intense, so don’t forget sunscreen and a hat.

Hydration and Snacks: Bring plenty of water and some snacks like nuts or energy bars.

Trekking Poles: Recommended to facilitate the ascent and protect your knees during the descent.

Optional Horse: In Soraypampa, you can rent a horse if you prefer not to walk the entire route.

What to do if you experience altitude sickness?

The most common symptoms are headache, fatigue, dizziness, or nausea. If this occurs, it is best to take breaks, hydrate well, and not overexert yourself. Guides usually carry oxygen if necessary.

Why choose the Humantay Lagoon tour?

High mountain landscapes: The lagoon offers a unique view with the snowy mountain backdrop and a stunning natural environment.

Short but challenging hike: Ideal for those looking for an intense trekking experience without spending several days on the trail.

Spiritual place: For many travelers, the lagoon is also a space for meditation and connection with Andean nature.

When is the best time to take the tour?

The ideal season is between May and September, when the weather is drier and the views are clearer. However, the tour can be taken year-round, as long as the necessary precautions are taken during the rainy season.
