What to Pack for Hiking Tours to Vinicunca, Palcoyo, and Humantay Lagoon
When planning a day trip to Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain, Palcoyo, or Humantay Lagoon, it’s essential to pack a well-equipped backpack. The Andean climate is changeable, and the altitude can present challenges, so good preparation will make all the difference in your experience.
What Type of Backpack Is Ideal?
A lightweight and comfortable backpack between 20 and 30 liters with adjustable straps and good support is recommended. Ideally, it should have several compartments to organize your belongings.
Recommended Packing List
- Water (1.5 to 2 liters)
Hydration is key during the trek. Carrying a reusable bottle or camelback is the most practical.
- Energy Snacks
Nuts, energy bars, chocolate, or dried fruit. They provide energy without taking up much space.
- Appropriate Layered Clothing
Bring a waterproof or windproof jacket, a thermal or fleece layer, and a quick-drying T-shirt. It’s also important to bring a sun hat, a wool hat, and light gloves for the cold.
- Sunscreen and Lip Balm
UV radiation increases at altitude, even on cloudy days. Protecting your skin and lips is essential.
- UV-Filtering Sunglasses
Very useful for protecting your eyes from bright light at high altitudes.
- Toilet paper or wet wipes
Indispensable if restrooms are unavailable.
- Antibacterial gel or disinfectant wipes
Useful before eating or after using the restroom.
- Trekking poles
Optional but recommended, especially in Vinicunca and Humantay, where there are steep slopes.
- Rain Poncho
The weather in the mountains can change in minutes. Bringing a light poncho is a good precaution.
- Cash
In soles, for small expenses such as bathrooms, souvenirs, or horse rentals.
- Camera or cell phone with a charged battery
Don’t forget to capture the scenery. If you plan to use it a lot, bring a power bank.
- Personal Medication
Include your usual medications and, if you think it’s necessary, altitude sickness pills or pain relievers.
- ID
Some agencies require a passport or other document for entry control.
Additional Tips Depending on the Destination
Vinicunca is the most physically demanding route. It is recommended to bring extra water, snacks, and good protection against the cold. Many people choose to rent a horse for the climb.
Palcoyo offers a shorter, less steep trek. Backpacks can be lighter, but it is still important to be prepared for the changeable weather.
Humantay combines steep slopes with low temperatures at the summit. Bringing a warm jacket, trekking poles, and good hydration is key.
