Acclimatization Tips

Visiting Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca), Palcoyo, or Humantay Lagoon is a unique experience filled with breathtaking landscapes, but it also involves dealing with the altitude. Tours to these destinations operate at altitudes of over 4,200 meters and up to 5,036 meters, which can be challenging if you’re not properly prepared. Here are some essential tips for acclimatizing and enjoying these destinations without any problems.

Why is acclimatization important?

When you travel to high altitudes, the oxygen level in the air decreases, which can affect your breathing and energy. If you don’t acclimatize properly, you could experience symptoms of altitude sickness such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue. Fortunately, with a few precautions, you can avoid these problems and enjoy your experience to the fullest.

Acclimatization Tips:

  1. Arrive in Cusco with plenty of time

Ideally, you should arrive in Cusco at least 1 or 2 days before your trek. During these days, you can take advantage of the time to rest and get used to the altitude, while also exploring the city at a leisurely pace.

  2. Avoid physical exertion during the first 24 hours

The first day in Cusco is crucial for your acclimatization. Avoid strenuous activities and allow your body to adapt. If you arrive very tired from the trip, it’s best to rest and drink plenty of water.

  3. Stay well hydrated

The air at high altitudes is drier, so staying hydrated is essential. Drink at least 2-3 liters of water a day to help your body adapt. Avoid alcoholic beverages, as they can dehydrate you.

  4. Eat a light and balanced diet

Foods rich in carbohydrates are ideal, as they provide sustained energy for your body. Avoid heavy or fatty foods that can make you feel uncomfortable, especially in the first 24 hours. It’s also recommended to eat fresh fruits and vegetables.

  5. Listen to your body

If you experience headaches, nausea, or dizziness, it’s important to take a break and stay well hydrated. If symptoms persist, don’t hesitate to seek medical help. In some cases, guides may offer supplemental oxygen.

  6. Take gentle walks before your tour

Take advantage of your time in Cusco to walk gently around the city. Gentle walks will help your body adjust to the physical exertion and altitude. Start with short walks and gradually increase your walking pace.

  7. Avoid overpacking your backpack

On the trails to Rainbow Mountain or Humantay Lagoon, make sure you only carry the essentials. Avoid carrying overly heavy backpacks, as the additional effort can increase your risk of altitude sickness.

Tips for trekking at high altitudes

  1. Climb at your own pace

At high altitudes, it’s essential to walk slowly and at your own pace. If you feel short of breath, pause, breathe deeply, and continue when you feel ready. Don’t rush.

  2. Take frequent breaks

During the hike, take regular breaks to rest and allow your body to recover. These breaks are especially important on routes like Vinicunca or Humantay, where the ascent can be steep.

  3. Use sunscreen

As you climb, UV radiation intensifies, so it’s important to use broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect yourself from sunburn. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to exposed areas like your face, ears, and neck.

  4. Dress in layers

The weather in the mountains changes quickly. It’s advisable to wear light clothing, but bring extra layers to protect yourself from the cold or rain. A waterproof jacket is essential for any sudden change in weather.

  5. Consider renting a horse (optional)

If you’re not comfortable with the physical exertion of hiking long distances at high altitude, consider renting a horse on-site. While not required, it’s a useful option at certain points along the trail.

Symptoms of altitude sickness and how to prevent it:

Headache: One of the most common symptoms. If you experience pain, try to rest and drink water.

Nausea and vomiting: These are signs that your body is not getting enough oxygen. Be sure to rest and drink fluids.

Extreme fatigue: It’s normal to feel tired at high altitude, but if fatigue is severe, find a quiet place to rest.
